K. Annamalai to Quit BJP, Focus on Floating New Regional Outfit

K. Annamalai, BJP's the power star for Tamilnadu state, is set to explore different role, under another umbrella of his mastery

CHENNAI: In a development that is set to reshape the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, former state BJP president K. Annamalai has decided to sever ties with the saffron party. The high-profile leader traveled to New Delhi on Tuesday to meet with BJP national president Nitin Nabin and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to formally convey his decision and tender his resignation. Sources close to the leader indicate that he plans to launch a new, independent political force in the state.

The exit of the former IPS officer-turned-politician marks the end of an impactful six-year journey with the BJP. Joining the party in 2020, Annamalai quickly rose through the ranks to lead the Tamil Nadu unit from 2021 to 2025. He became the face of the party’s southern push, leveraging extensive statewide padayatras, aggressive social media campaigns, and a fierce anti-corruption rhetoric to cultivate a significant following among educated, urban youth.

Insiders reveal that deep ideological and strategic rifts between Annamalai and the BJP central command had been brewing for over 18 months. The core friction stemmed from the party’s electoral strategy for the 2026 assembly elections. While Annamalai strongly advocated for building the BJP’s organizational strength independently from the ground up, the national leadership insisted on a pragmatic alliance with the AIADMK to corner the ruling DMK. Dissatisfaction regarding candidate selection further widened the gap.

The breaking point appears closely tied to the massive political realignment caused by actor-turned-politician Vijay’s debut party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), which dramatically upended the traditional DMK-AIADMK binary in the state. Annamalai reportedly believes that TVK’s sudden success signals the end of the traditional 60-year Dravidian political cycle and opens an ideal window for alternative forces.

Rather than jumping straight into a new political party, sources indicate that Annamalai intends to launch a broad-based “people’s movement” or social organization in the coming days, heavily inspired by phrases popularized by superstar Rajinikanth. This vehicle will transition into a fully registered political outfit over the next six to eight months. He envisions the party as a “secular, regional force with a national outlook”—an ideology described by his aides as “Dravidian 2.0″—aiming to champion Tamil pride and local interests while operating constructively within the national framework. By positioning himself outside the traditional polar opposites, Annamalai intends to emerge as a premier political force ahead of the 2031 state elections.
